Design

Lately, I've been really into interior design. I used to think all that stuff was so boring but now I'm obsessed. It all started when I stumbled upon this great design site Design Sponge in college and discovered all these great designers and interiors. Now I scour the NYTimes online real estate and homes section and check out all the unbelievable homes for fun (yes for fun). I've also found another great site, Desire to Inspire which is definitely worth checking out. I really wish I was talented/creative enough to be an interior designer; I think that would be a pretty amazing job.

I'm really excited about finally having my own space later this year to decorate and furnish. Although I am living alone now, my room is literally dorm-room sized and simply too small to work with. Also, since I'm only living here for the year, it didn't make sense to try and decorate.

I think I like interior design for the same reason I like fashion design; it's like making your home a piece of artwork. And not surprisingly, I have the same taste in both fashion and interior design--minimalist with interesting but subtle details. Although I think in the latter I'd be more willing to do bold punches of color and more experimental touches. I think. Really, if I could someday have a home that looks similar to the rooms in an anthropologie catalog, I'd be pretty happy.

Sigh.

NYE

Last year I celebrated NYE in Japan with K and his friends. It was fun but anti-climatic. This year, I dragged myself up to Seoul to celebrate with some other ETAs and to meet up with M, a college friend who was visiting Korea. It was fun, but again, anti-climatic. I don't know but I've come to feel like NYE is the most over-hyped thing ever, yet it's always the biggest let down. I mean I had fun in Seoul but it never feels like how it's supposed to feel, you know? Like you're having the best party of your friggin' life! And it never, ever feels that way.

Anyway, I missed my favorite part of NYE two years in a row-watching TV. I know, lame, but that is what I'd usually do in years past to celebrate. And despite feeling slightly depressed being at home watching people have fun on TV instead of actually partaking in such festivities myself, I really enjoy the periodic times in the broadcast when they'll show people celebrating all over the world. It's so fun to see all the different countries and the different ways people celebrate the same holiday.

I'm gonna get all corny/sentimental here, so be forewarned: It's my favorite part because it's so great to see everyone, all over the world, sharing the same moment. It's my favorite part because it's so great to see all the different smiling faces and feel like I'm part of something bigger than my Korean-American identity, something global and special.

Oh and I've decided against doing the whole NY resolutions. I always forget them after like a week, and I usually do the same ones, like "Exercise more," "Be a better person," blah blah blah. And the thing is, I should do those things because I really want to do them and not to fulfill something that I mumbled last-minute on NYE.
